Since the 1990s my work with chocolate has changed dramatically.
Starting out with Chocolate cakes & desserts, pretty boxes of chocolates,
giant Easter eggs and moulded figurines to now
creating chocolate compositions of
varying inspirations; animals, childlike
characters , architecture and traditional subjects.
I have always had a fascination of making food look beautiful. Cake
decorating started it as a little girl and later being introduced to “proper”
chocolate in France, Switzerland and Venezuela was just a heavenly experience.
I find the process of chocolate intricate and complex, the transformation of
Bean to Bar and Bar to Sculptures has struck me as magical.
Every day life and objects inspire my work, even walking past a
department store window can catch my eye as I imagine it in chocolate.
I was definitely no artist school, and I can’t draw to save my life, so
I am amused that my work has taken me down this artistic route. When I
create a piece of work I may start
with a rough sketch of what I see inside my head adding and improvising as I go
along, often the piece will change completely depending on my mood at the time.
Given the time of year, I have chosen an
Easter theme for my creations for ‘Artbeat’,
an obvious choice I found hard to ignore as Easter just wouldn’t be the same
without chocolate.
