Charm of Place - detail

Place of Charm
Stephens explores shifting patterns of meaning and potential for narrative in the
grouping and regrouping of found, man-made and natural objects through
sculptural assemblage. With an interest in taxonomy and the appropriation of
objects, the artist uses an eclectic mix of materials to combine the collaborative
relationship between the 'natural' world and the man-made.
The artist has an aesthetic sensibility that is explored through materials and social
space. The relationship between each piece and the space, in which it is presented, is
fundamental to the work. Linear elements taken from the surrounding architecture
are used to make striking objects forming an interplay of seduction and control.
Minimalist forms are forced to co-habit with an array of materials forming curious
unions of disparate elements offering a hybrid of surreal and poetic associations
often presented as one sculpture.
Stephens’ sculptural works often separate familiar objects from their normal
surroundings placing them in new constellations. She is interested in the
phenomenological truth of an object and offers a renewed preoccupation with the
three-dimensional object.
Amy Stephens completed her MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design,
